Every child is a dancer, and during the summer, our studio becomes a gymnasium for young artists of all types.
During summer dance immersion camps for ages 4-13, students are divided into two class sections by age and ability (making summer dance immersions accessible for both new and experienced dancers) as we rehearse, explore, and create in preparation for the end-of-camp showcase for parents. We make full use of our spacious indoor/outdoor facility, always dancing indoors while snacks, lunch, and design projects take place outdoors on our back patio. Daily technique classes develop strength, flexibility, and coordination while we dive deep into more familiar dance styles and experiment with new ones. No matter their background or experience, each child leaps ahead, one step at a time.
In addition to daily classes and rehearsals in the style of each week's theme, campers enjoy daily dance history through film, stretching their creative chops and problem solving skills through set, prop, and costume design projects, and exploring theme specific activities like singing, acting, and dance composition. Camps each year follow an overarching theme to tie learning together and so that every iteration of our most popular camps is new and different. This year, we'll be exploring inspiration--where it comes from, how to follow it, and where it leads--using iconic works and choreographers across both performance and social-based dance styles as illustrations to fuel our own inspiration.
During our Company B Summer Dance Intensive for serious dancers ages 11+, dancers work in a single group and every day begins with a ballet class. Technique classes are longer in general (1-1.5hrs classes vs 45min-1hr immersion classes), and each day includes a 2nd morning technique class in either modern or jazz styles. Afternoon enrichment includes a mix of hip hop, dance composition, Pilates, yoga, pointe, improvisation, and rehearsal for an outdoor fall performance like Flatbush Frolic rather than an end-of week showcase.
Business Review
"Alden Moves is such an absolute gem in Brooklyn. My daughter started taking dance classes at age 4 and immediately connected to the teachers and studio community. Dance at Alden Moves has built her self-esteem, her sense of belonging, and of course, her creativity and love of movement and music. Alden and her staff are a diverse and talented group of working artists, and have been such a great influence on my kid. Somehow, Alden strikes the right balance of making the classes and (optional) performances disciplined yet fun. The vibe is friendly and low-pressure, but also gives the kids opportunities to grow in their skill and experience." –Meghan G.
