Description
The International Music Festival is a three-day celebration of the music and culture of the diverse ethnic communities of New York City. The festival, which takes place entirely at the Jalopy Theatre features workshops as well as performances. In previous years the festival has presented performers from immigrant musical communities of New York sharing traditions as diverse as son Jarocho of Veracruz, the Duxianqin of southern China, Cumbia of Colombia, choral music of the Balkans and Caucasus mountains, klezmer of Belarus, flamenco of Granada, Arabic maqams, Serbian ballads of love and loss, and Indian classical raga.
SATURDAY, JUNE 8th
Theatre Stage:
7:00 pm: The Jalopy Chorus - Jalopy’s Resident Vocal Ensemble, performing world vocal harmonies
7:30 pm: Baklava Express - NYC Based, Middle Eastern fusion band
8:30 pm: CTMD presents the New York Tibetan Ensemble - Based in Queens, the New York Tibetan Ensemble strives to preserve and present traditional music and dance forms from across Tibet.
9:30 pm: Saha Gnawa - Contemporary Moroccan Gnawa band led by Ma'alem Hassan Ben Jaafer
Tavern Stage:
8:30 pm: Gavin Mendonca - Guyanese folk/rock musician who aims to preserve his history through music.
10 pm: La Banda Chuska - merges the sounds of vintage Peruvian cumbia and psychedelic chicha with 1960s Latin American and Middle Eastern surf rock
