🐉 Lunar New Year Celebration at Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Please join us for Lunar New Year 2024 as the New York Chinese Cultural Center (NYCCC) returns to Queens Museum with its signature program. Together we will be celebrating the Year of the Dragon with folk dances, the Lion and Dragon Dance, the Peking Opera, and traditional arts and crafts. The event will include an hour-long performance program featuring professional artists and students of NYCCC’s School of the Arts. 

In addition to a hands-on Chinese calligraphy and ink brush painting workshop for kids and adults, there will be an all-ages art-making workshop on dragon craft creations led by the Queens Museum education team.

RSVP for general admission to our Lunar New Year Celebration. (RSVP is required for general admission to our Lunar New Year celebration. The Chinese Calligraphy and Ink Brush Painting Workshop requires a separate, additional ticket.)

Please note: Due to the immense popularity of the Lunar New Year Celebration, participation in artmaking activities and seating for the performance is not guaranteed.

1-2 pm: Performance Program by New York Chinese Cultural Center

  • Featuring Chinese folk and classical dances, Chinese drums, Peking opera, ribbon dance demonstration, as well as yoyo, lion and dragon dance performed by artists and students from NYCCC.

2-4 pm: Chinese Calligraphy and Ink Brush Painting Workshop by New York Chinese Cultural Center (25-minute sessions – advance tickets required!)

  • Using a calligraphy brush, a teaching artist from the NYCCC will show and explain the relationship between ancient Chinese pictographs and their modern-day ideographs. Participants will be guided through to write simple characters in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Guests will be able to take home their simple calligraphy writings made in the workshop.

2:15-4 pm: Dragon Craft Creation with Family Programs

  • Join us for a quick and fun family art workshop celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dragon. This activity aims to bring the mythical dragon to life in vibrant colors. Families can create their own dragon artwork using simple materials like colored paper, markers, and glue. Participants can follow easy step-by-step instructions, making it suitable for all ages.
  • No advance registration is required and families can engage in this 15-minute activity between 2:15-4 pm on a first come first served basis. Children must be accompanied during art-making by families or caregivers.
