🫶 City of Forest Day Volunteer Projects across NYC

Come work with NYC Parks Stewardship to care for local street trees in Sunset Park! This event is from 9:00am to noon. Volunteers will learn how to aerate, cultivate, mulch, and identify street trees. They will also learn about the important roles street trees play in New York City.

Join Prospect Park Alliance and Audubon New York for nature exploration activities at the Prospect Park Audubon Center on City of Forest Day, a citywide effort to raise awareness and celebrate New York City’s urban forest. Prospect Park is home to over 30,000 trees of more than 175 species. Each of these trees is an important part of our thriving wildlife habitat and home to many species of mammals, birds and bugs.

Take part in the City of Forest Day by volunteering with Fort Greene Park Conservancy, in the park-wide maintenance and nourishment of Fort Greene Park's ecosystem! You can expect everything from leaf composting, weeding out invasive plant species, mulching, and more! This is the perfect opportunity for connecting with nature, the community, and getting your hands dirty!

Join us for open garden hours in honor of City of Forest Day! Come relax in our beautiful shaded garden, enjoy watching the pollinators work, and meet fellow garden and urban forest enthusiasts! Westbrook Memorial Garden is located at 1233 Pacific Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. We are a member of the Brooklyn Queens Land Trust.

Volunteers will come to 50 Kent on October 14th to prepare 4 garden beds slated to be planted on October 28th. The volunteers will mainly be weeding invasive plants. There will be demonstrations by other seasoned volunteers and horticultural experts to answer questions. Gloves and tools provided. Please bring water bottle. Celebrate City of Forest Day at Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s first annual Open House! This day of cultivation, exploration, and celebration will include: neighborhood walking tours, street tree care, native plants for sale, family-friendly science activities, and more.

We will be conducting a street tree care event inlcuding clearing trash from tree beds, aerating soil, and weeding. 

Librarian Melissa McCarthy reads amazing stories about trees in the park, then make your own forest of leaves.

Join Georgia Silvera Seamans and Loyan Beausoleil for family friendly bird activities in the native meadow at the Naval Cemetery Landscape.

Street trees do much to improve our environment but often receive little care. Fall is a great time to give your street tree some TLC to see it through winter and lay the groundwork for a healthy rebirth in spring. Yet even the most well-intentioned practices can damage our neighborhood trees. Learn to avoid the common “pit”-falls of tree bed gardening and how to remedy them. Bring your questions! Get a free plant to try!

Join Prospect Park Alliance for a Park Pitch In volunteer event on City of Forest Day, a citywide effort to raise awareness and celebrate New York City's urban forest. Prospect Park Alliance volunteers will plant over 100 native trees to restore Prospect Park’s beloved landscape, which has seen the loss of a significant number of ash trees since 2017 due to Emerald Ash Borer, a deadly wood-boring beetle.

Join Greenpoint Library to celebrate City of Forest Day, October 14th. Stop by the library for a Greenpoint Tree Bingo card and a a bag of daffodil bulbs, while supplies last.

Embark on an afternoon of exploration at Green-Wood, a sprawling 478-acre oasis in the heart of Brooklyn. With the aid of self-guided maps and our user-friendly mobile application, immerse yourself under the canopy of Green-Woo's trees, discover the state champion hackberry, delve into Green-Wood's rich history, and forge connections with the diverse urban wildlife (from a safe and respectful distance, of course).

Learn about some featured trees in Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Power of Trees exhibit, plus catch burgeoning blossoms at their best and other highlights of the season at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Free with Brooklyn Botanic Garden admission. Meet on Magnolia Plaza by building steps.
