Description

During our school break programs campers will bundle up and spend time outdoors in Prospect Park connecting with nature. Each day offers a new adventure where we’ll learn about our environment, connect with friends – both new and old, learn through hands on activities and games, and of course – PLAY!

The impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the larger Civil Rights Movement’s mission of equality is enduring, though the fight for equity continues even today. To honor Dr. King and those who have and will continue to fight for justice for all, campers will explore the impact of local Black community leaders, and engage with their peers on themes of identity, friendship, and advocacy.

Each day at day camp is spent in ‘small camp’, a consistent group of 10 campers with 2 dedicated group leaders!

Schedules will vary from day to day, but include a mix of various activities. These building blocks include:

  • MORNING CHECK-IN – setting goals and expectations; talking through the day’s program
  • SKILL BUILDING  – each day features a hard skill that campers will spend some time focusing on through programming. When your camper comes home they can say: ‘I learned that at camp!’
  • ART/SCIENCE/GARDEN ACTIVITIES – we focus on hands-on learning through lots of art and crafts projects, science experiments, and more – all done outdoors!
  • HIKING/ORIENTEERING – campers will learn to read maps and navigate the park – we’ll build our own compasses, engage in exciting scavenger hunts and nature walks
  • TEAM BUILDING – specific team building activities are used to bring the group together, teaching campers how to communicate, collaborate, and overcome challenges
  • MUSIC/SINGING – we sing all the time, both during specific song sessions, as well as, while transitioning from place to place!
  • TRIPS – during longer school breaks, we will partake in local field trips for more learning.
  • PLAYGROUND VISITS – Prospect Park has many great playgrounds where campers will visit for free play fun a couple of times each week.
  • RUNNING/ACTIVE GAMES – when you’ve got a lot of energy to burn, nothing is better than learning a new game to play with your friends!
  • LUNCH/SOLO – we value taking some time for ourselves each day – after lunch, campers have the opportunity for some downtime to themselves – take a nap, read a or watch the clouds.
  • UNSTRUCTURED FREE PLAY – campers spend time each day playing by their own rules in a pre-defined area where they learn how to negotiate rules, engage in creative play, and have fun with friends
  • SUNSET CIRCLE – the day always ends around the imaginary fire, singing songs, processing the day’s highlights, and transitioning to the day’s end. Each camper gets a chance to share.

Considering one of our Brooklyn Day Camps? Our break camp programs will give you and your child a great taste of what summer at Trail Blazers is like.

Prospect Park (Prospect Lefferts Gardens):

We’ll start and end each day outdoors, with drop off and pick up directly in Prospect Park. We are located at the Prospect Park Carousel lawn – use the park entrance at Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard.

Drop off is between 8:30 and 9 am daily. The regular camp day ends at 4 pm, with normal day pick up available between 3:30 and 4 pm each day. Aftercare is available for a flat fee of $13 per day. Aftercare pick up is available anytime between 4:30 and 6:00 pm. Aftercare is held outdoors at the carousel lawn.

Trail Blazers does not shy away from a little rain or cold weather and will stay outdoors whenever possible; however we will be doing things a bit differently this Spring. Given the rise in omicron variants and that our campers come from a variety of schools and communities, we will not be using indoor space this Spring. If weather reports call for severe or unsafe conditions, we will need to cancel for the day. If the forecast is not promising, we will give you an initial heads up the evening before the program. If camp will not operate, we will notify you via email by 7 am.  In the event that weather cancels a program, refunds will be available upon request, less a 30% deposit. See full refund policy here.
