Description
WORKSHOP DETAILS Come help us transform our natural spaces into all forms of shelter -- from natural debris shelters to reclaimed material fortresses protecting our very own Tiny House! Kids will be challenged to get creative with repurposed materials to fortify our collaborative construction and create many types of shelters, from the simplest survival design to a true castle-style fort. Using engineering techniques, kids may also build ballistas to launch paper airplanes and other harmless projectiles from their fort creations. TUITION DETAILS KoKo NYC is committed to remaining a program accessible to all members of our community. We offer three tiers of tuition rates to allow each family to choose a price point that works best for their individual situation. This is an honor system, and relies on our shared commitment to take care of our community as a whole. We will not ask for financial documentation, but simply ask families who are able to pay the full amount to do so, allowing for more equitable access to our programming for all. Discounts are available for families enrolling more than one child (5% discount for 1 sibling, 10% discount for additional siblings), as well as families enrolling one child for multiple programs (5% discount).
TIER 1: Full Tuition Rate (as listed) TIER 2: 80% Tuition Rate TIER 3: 60% Tuition Rate
Please email community@kokonyc.org to receive the code for Tier 2 and Tier 3 pricing, as the Sawyer system is not yet built to allow this choice initially. We will send interested families their code promptly and then registration should be completed by families ASAP so that the spot is held.
If Tier 3 Tuition is a cost barrier for your family, please inquire about available scholarships by emailing: community@kokonyc.org

About KoKo NYC
KoKo NYC is the arts education program of Open Source Gallery, a non-profit arts organization based in Brooklyn. KoKo NYC serves over 1,000 children annually through programs in local schools, the Brooklyn Public Library and the CAMBA Flagstone Family Center (a family homeless shelter in Brownsville, Brooklyn). KoKo NYC provides art-based science and engineering classes in school and after-school programs throughout New York City. We also offer annual Soap Box Summer Workshops and after-school programs such as Boat Building and Inventor’s Lab at our site in Brooklyn. The use of repurposed materials as the foundation of KoKo’s building supplies engenders environmental awareness as well as a spirit of innovation. Students learn to make art from their environment, to see “trash” as an opportunity to create something new. Many classes also utilize open source technology and/or simple components such as littleBits to teach kids about circuitry, programming and other scientific concepts through the process of creation.KoKo NYC class options are ever expanding, but the core of every class and workshop remains the same: to empower kids to see potential all around them, to see their own ideas to fruition, to feel a sense of ownership in their work and to make connections between art and science.Since 2007, KoKo NYC’s education programs have been hosted by esteemed organizations such as the MoMa, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Brooklyn Museum, TedYouth and Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. We have been featured in numerous publications and media including The New York Times, New York Daily News and Brooklyn Independent Television.
