The Importance of Prioritizing Mental Health During the Holiday Season

By Joey Ackerman, LCSW-R, Founder of Tรชte Therapy December 5, 2024

As the holiday season kicks into gear, it’s vital to acknowledge the potential stressors that may accompany this festive time, especially against the backdrop of the current state of the world.  Taking stock of how this may impact your mental health is essential as we navigate this holiday season.

The holidays are typically associated with high expectations, such as creating the perfect gatherings, exchanging meaningful gifts, and maintaining harmonious relationships with family and friends. These pressures can lead to anxiety, perfectionism, and stress. Additionally, loneliness, grief, guilt, and financial stress are also common emotions that people experience during the holidays but are not always openly addressed.

Furthermore, over the last few years, family gatherings have the potential to become a forum for heated discussions around current events, politics, or other divisive topics, contributing to stress and tension.

At Tête Therapy, we understand the unique challenges and the emotional landscape you may be experiencing and we are here to help you navigate this time. We also feel it it’s incredibly important to identify the signs that may indicate a higher than usual level of distress. Here are some symptoms that may suggest you need additional support:

  • Appetite/Sleep Disturbances
  • Mood Swings
  • Chronic feelings of hopelessness/suicidal thoughts
  • Urges to self-harm (binge/purge, cutting, etc)
  • Loss of interest in pleasurable activities
  • Increased dependence on substances
  • Increased restlessness, tenseness, or hyper vigilance
  • Psychosomatic symptoms

If you find yourself meeting any of this criteria or feel an overall sense of unease this holiday season, we invite you to explore our services at tetetherapy.com.

We look forward to the opportunity of nurturing the emotional and well-being of those in the Macaroni Kid Community. Together, we can help build stronger, healthier, and happier lives. Your mental health matters, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
