Here are five ways to make the most of a long-awaited snow day with the family in Brooklyn...
Sledding, snowmen, and snowball fights! As the Scandinavians say, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." Go on and get suited up in your best snow gear, then get out, and play in the snow. Don't miss out on Mother Nature’s free frozen playground!
Best sledding spots in northwest Brooklyn:
- Hillside Dog Park on Columbia Heights between Middagh and Vine Streets (dogs and kids share when it snows!)
- Brooklyn Bridge Park
- Pier 1 Bridge View Lawn
- Pier 5 Uplands Lawn
- Clumber Corner on Washington Street towards Cadman Plaza (a bit treacherous because of proximity to road and steepness, but big kids love it)
- Main Street Lawn in Brooklyn Bridge Park next to Main Street/Pirate Ship Playground and Environmental Education Center (restrooms!)
❄️ Fort Greene Park:
- Enter at Willoughby or DeKalb Avenue and choose your adventure. There are several hills that vary in steepness
❄️ Williamsburg:
- It's a flat neighborhood, but you could try the ramp near Bushwick Inlet Park soccer field
❄️ Prospect Park – so many great options:
- Enter at 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance and head for the hills near Tennis House
- Enter at 3rd or 5th Street at Prospect Park West entrance and head for the hills near Picnic House
- Enter at any entrance and head to Nethermead near the center of the park
- Enter at Grand Army Plaza, and head past the Endale Arch for Sled Hill and Long Meadow
- Enter at Vanderbilt Street and head northeast toward Wellhouse drive to access the steep Lookout Hill
- Enter at Ocean and Parkside Avenue for Drummer's Grove (near LeFrak Center ice skating)
❄️ And a quick ferry ride away from Brooklyn... Governors Island:
- Grassy Hill, the side of Slide Hill and the south slope of Discovery Hill make for great sledding
Need a sled? Head to your local hardware store or Two Kids and a Dog in DUMBO to find one. If not, try Target/Marshall's/Home Depot/Lowe's. Safety tip: Have your littles wear a helmet!
Baking! Picture watching the snow fall in a warm, sweet-smelling kitchen. Get your kids involved and treat yourself to some comfort food. Plan ahead and buy ingredients for your favorite recipe!
Snuggle up with some blankets on the sofa and enjoy some family reading time! Have each of your kids pick their favorite book and enjoy some educational family time while watching the snow fall.
Roll up your sleeves and get into an art project! Snow days are the perfect day to get out the paint and play dough.
Create a movie theater experience in your living room! Pop some popcorn, get some snacks and juice boxes, and make a concession stand. Have your kids make their own movie tickets while you get everything set up.
Enjoy the snow!! ❄️❄️❄️
